Pinecone Algae (Rhipocephalus phoenix)
+ January 10, 2009
Unfortunately, this specimen completely died off. I had been expecting it to go south before eventually making a recovery, but
it has completely disappeared. Some cyanobacteria had been growing on it, and I suspect that was just too much for it in it's
weakened condition.

The pinecone algae has really deteriorated and has shed all of it's "leaves".

Pinecone algae is a calcified green algae that grows to about 4". Most herbivores will not consume it because of it's high
mineral content. It requires a fine, deep substrate.
I have just received this macro-algae and it appears to be suffering significant shipping stress. I have been advised to expect
it to die back dramatically before making a come back.
