Orange Spot Rabbitfish (Siganus gutattus)
+ November 26, 2009
This fish has grown considerably in the past few months. I am beginning to suspect that there is some natural variation
in the coloring of these fish. Mine seems to stay a darker gray with orange spots and only a tinge of blue. Some of the photos
I've seen have shown a sky blue with orange spots.

I traded this fish in at an LFS some time back for a smaller specimen of the same species. The older fish hid most of the
time, no matter how far I stood from the tank. It was extremely difficult to get out of the tank and I ended up having to
temporarily take out nearly all of the rock.
The newer fish is almost 2" smaller, is more outgoing, and spends more of it's time with ideal coloration. I'll try to get a
picture soon.

I couldn't resist this medium-sized orange spotted rabbitfish at a local fish store. It will out-grow my tank but I don't think
I will have any problem getting a trade for it. It appears to have three colors: an extremely distressed white with black
patches, an "unhappy" black with orange spots, and an ideal blue with orange spots. In this photo, it has the black and orange
coloration.
It is an extremely skittish fish and has spent much of it's time so far out of view. It only comes out for my evening
feedings. I've actually had it for nearly a month, but have only just recently gotten a picture of it.
