Masked Rabbitfish (Siganus puellus)

+ November 26, 2009

This rabbitfish has finally stopped being skittish. He now roams the tank freely whether or not I'm in the room. I suspect that he's been splashing at the top of the water, because I often find my eggcrate lid covered in salt above his favorite grazing area.

This fish is out and about most of the time but still hides whenever I get close to the tank.

This rabbitfish is a lot less skittish now, but it's stil difficult to get a picture of.

Like other rabbitfish, the Masked Rabbitfish has venomous spines along its back which it only displays when threatened. The Masked Rabbitfish can grow up to 15" in the wild and requires a large aquarium with ample swimming room. Although they will accept meatier foods in captivitity, in the wild they mainly consume algaes.

This specimen has a very nice gold color with a deep black "mask". Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a picture of it as it is extremely skittish. My yellow tang was harassing it initially, but this behavior seems to have subsided. I plan to trade it to someone with a larger tank when it outgrows mine.
