In-Tank Filtration

+ August 15, 2008

I am using my old Octupus NeedleWheel 150 Skimmer on the new tank. I have constructed a new gate-valve control for it which is much quieter than the one on my old tank. The skimmer is still working great and creating a lot of skimmate.

Because of heat issues, I am running the skimmer only at nights (10:45PM to 10:15AM).

I have replaced my old Kent Marine Phos Reactor with this Two Little Fishies PhosBan 150 Reactor. Although the two perform similarly, it is much easier to replace the media in the Two Little Fishies unit. I actually accidentaly broke my Kent Marine unit while attempting to change the media.

I am running carbon through the unit from 10:45PM - 10:15AM daily with a Maxijet 1200 pump (rated for 295 gallons-per-hour).

Some additional mechanical filtration is provided by a sponge/filter-pad placed between two baffles in such a way that all the system's water runs through it.
